Awake

Technology Demo "Awake"

"Awake" was intended as an introduction to creating a video game and an attempt to master the Unity engine. Originally, the game was being developed on the Ogre engine as a point-and-click adventure under the working title "Mile of Cry".

Although it may be hard to believe today, there was a time when "real" game engines were available only to large companies in the video game industry. Small studios had to rely on modest, garage-style methods. As absurd as it may sound, entire scenes were built not in an editor but in LightWave3D and then converted into the Ogre engine.

The lack of dedicated tools became a major obstacle for us, yet every achieved visual effect was exciting and gave us hope for success.

Character animations were created at the Academy of Fine Arts studio after hours. Unfortunately, we encountered serious difficulties with their implementation, which caused the animations to be somewhat rough and occasionally lacking smoothness.

Despite the difficulties, the demo was completed, however publisher proposals made further work impossible. Like many similar projects, this one was shelved, and the team eventually disbanded.

After some time, the project served as a base for learning Unity. The gap between the Ogre and Unity engines was unimaginable. From that point on, Unity became the second - most important - work tool. The first one has forever remained LightWave3D.

Below are fragments of what survived. It was the year 2010…
